Happy Garden -- Week 2

"Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes." -- Unknown

haha The above is quite true! I am looking forward to the day when I have plump juicy tomatoes growing. If our garden in successful we will be overwhelmed with zucchini and all kinds of vegetables.

I took these on Sunday, as I will continue to do until the harvest season. :)

We made a trip to Fred Meyers and found some more items to fit into our garden (I took pictures before we planted these items so you will see them next week):

  • Four marigolds that are now on a corner
  • Carrots
  • Lettuce
I also picked up some sunflower seeds and put them out by the driveway. So happy to see my garden grow each week! :)

More From Sunday

"The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses." -- Hanna Rion

Most definitely. Being outside is a wonderful way to relieve stress and to feel grounded. Here are some more pictures from Sunday... it was delightful :) Excited that this weekend is going to be warm! Grow garden grow!

Top three

  • Plants in pots needing to be transplanted
  • Beautiful calla lilly - they remind me of the family beach house (think these came from there actually)
  • Happy Cheese Puff, sunning himself
Middle three
  • First rose bouquet of the season
  • Used my grandfather's hoe to organize the rows of corn -- you were with us Papa!
  • Pretty clouds, looked like ocean waves
Bottom two
  • My gardening supervisors: Mrs. Peacock & Cheese Puff
  • Sleeping Beauty under the roses
Happy Friday!!!

My First Garden-- Week 1

As mentioned two posts ago, Mom and I planted our first garden on Sunday. We were a bit late in getting it started, but we had to get the ground rototilled and get some plants started in pots. Sunday was a lovely warm day, which was great for planting all of the vegetables!

This area was used for our big Costco pool. We didn't put it up last year and I have always envisioned this place as a garden. So exciting that it has finally happened!
GROW plants, GROW!
We are growing:
  • Two types of corn: Golden Jubilee & Bodacious (hope they're good!)
  • 5 Tomato plants: 2 Willamette, Early Girl, Roma & Grape
  • Carrots
  • Kohlrabi
  • Miniature pumpkins for fun
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach (am skeptical on whether this will be successful but hoping!)
  • 6 Zucchini plants -- yellow and green (if they all grow we will be so inundated haha)
  •  3 herbs in a pot -- thyme, basil & dill
We also planted various flower seeds around the border so we will see what happens. Could be quite colorful!

Happy (almost) Summer :)

Outfit Inspiration: Watermelon Colors

Lilly's Style from "Summer Colors" post (also on Pinterest)
I love this outfit that Lilly put together recently! The colors remind me of a watermelon -- the pink and green. I'm totally loving her gingham shorts (J. Crew of course) along with those fun sandals from Target. This is good inspiration for my trip down to Southern Cali in August! It will be short wearing weather for sure :) My mom and I will be going to Disneyland while we're down there (first time haha) and this would be great for one of those days.  Thanks Lilly for the outfit inspiration! You're awesome!

How would you interpret her look?

Breaking the Silence with Life Updates

There's been a good reason for my silence on here for the past few weeks. I've had to make some challenging decisions and have had some interesting experiences as a result. There's still quite a bit of thoughts swirling in my mind, but I feel relieved in many ways too. With discretion, I will try to explain what has happened. I am just going to bullet point things because a list will keep my thoughts more concise. I apologize for this being a little choppy but it is what it is ;-)
  • Approximately two weeks ago, my boyfriend, B (Brian) found out that his mom has stage 4 pancreatic and liver cancer. She was given 4-6 months to live and several treatment options. His family is from Spokane so that meant a long drive for us and that I would be gone from home for a weekend. It's a long story but it meant that I had to confront my mother and tell her of my plans. Prior to this she had not met B (as I say long story) but I was honest in my feelings about needing to go with him, and was very upset about everything. Amazingly enough, communication with my mom was not shut off and she seemed understanding of why I had to go.
  • Guess this is Part II? B and I went to Spokane on the 1st and returned on the 3rd. We arrived late to his brother and sister-in-laws house Friday evening, and then had a very busy Saturday.
  • Saturday looked like this: Breakfast with his dad and his dad's lady friend, afternoon with his mom, then met a family that are his friends, and then had dinner with a lovely couple, then.... the evening ended with daiquiris on his brother & sister-in-laws' deck. Let me tell you, I was exhausted!
  • I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to meet his mom -- she is an extraordinary woman and I have so much respect for her. God willing, I will see her again soon. We're planning to go back in a few weeks.
  • On Sunday we had dinner with his brother, SIL and dad then left town by 8AM. The drive home seemed much faster than going. Roadtrips are that way though, you have more anticipation to the place you haven't gone before. I thoroughly enjoyed myself - my family and I have done several big trips so being the car for a long time didn't bother me. I liked being with him and seeing a change of scenery.
  • My sister and brother-in-law also came home that weekend and I was worried that I wouldn't see them. Thankfully B and I got back early enough on Sunday and I got spend time with them. It was also my BIL's birthday so that was fun to celebrate.
  • Going to Spokane was incredibly beneficial to my relationship with B. I would say it was a turning point for us. I feel much more connected to B and see him in context now. He has a great family and I am excited to get to know them better.
  • Making this choice to do what I felt was right -- going on the trip -- was a big step for me and it positively helped my relationship with my mother as well.  I felt empowered for making that choice and I feel like there is a healthy distance with my mom now. Perhaps it just took her a long time to digest my independence. All I know is that FINALLY I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Hip hip hooray!
Which has led to the most recent glorious event in my life....
  • On Sunday, after planting our garden (I will write a special post on that!), Mom and I met up with B at Mongolian Grill. They FINALLY met! Overall, the conversation was good and Mom seemed pleased. B was also awesome in paying for dinner so that earned him some golden stars ;-) I am SO relieved that they have met and that these "walls" have come down. I feel like I can celebrate my relationship and really make B apart of my life. Such a good feeling... and I can repeat: FINALLY!

Outfit Inspiration: Belted Floral Top

found via Pinterest from The Life Pretty Anonymous
I love, love, love this outfit! A beautiful ruffley floral shirt + cardigan + belt + jean skinnies = great combo! I do have a floral top and could create an outfit quite similar to this one. Perfect for Spring (though, if you live in the PNW, might I suggest a pair of boots for this week?).

Happy Tuesday!

P.S. I checked out this fashion blog and it's authored by two sisters who enjoy fashion. They write anonymously with tasteful humor. I think I'll peruse their site a bit more!

Little Bit of Sunshine

found via Pinterest from here
Though much of today was sleepy, gray and rainy there were little bits of happiness. Each day has its own joys of course and all are worth noting. Sometimes I just don't write the details of every day, I think that would a bit too repetitious.

Being that I woke from a bizarre dream that was a combination of "Avengers" and "Harry Potter" (which were super realistic and oddly mixed in with other events in my life) I am glad that the rest of the day was mostly regular. As I was coming to, I noticed a bunch of voices outside that probably had added to the last strange moments of my dream. Groggily, I looked out the window and saw it was the once-per-trimester, 1 hour "community service" high school group (doing SOLV) gathering to go trudge through the creek area behind my house.

In my brightly colored pajamas I scurried through the house hoping no one would see me from the front window, in attempts to find my big orange wussy cat. I didn't want him to be traumatized. Thankfully I found him resting in a flower pot by the house in the backyard.

Unfortunately I had to go back outside within a couple of minutes (yes in a bright red oversized shirt and light pink pants) and entice Cheese out of the flower pot. I had to get him inside because the yard workers arrived and I knew he would freak out. So, with a lot of encouragement and a bowl of food acting as a "carrot" I got the big boy inside the back room. He didn't complain once he was locked in the back-- but why would he when he had breakfast, a warm place to rest his head and a safe haven from the scary things outside?!

Oh yes, in case you're wondering I think I managed to not be seen by the high schoolers but who knows. I did hear an odd whistley noise before going inside. I will assume they were making sounds for fun or to attract birds. Surely they would not pay attention to the red haired, brightly dressed lady calling to "Cheese."

Anyhoo... Around 11 AM I met with one of my girl cousins at a delicious cafe. I devoured a tasty turkey and aged white cheddar sandwhich while having a nice conversation. Though I was partly distracted by the guy behind me bumping his chair next to mine because the tables were too close. At one point I glanced at some part of the cafe and realized chair guy had on Army camo. I was amused. Then that's what reminded me that my all too strange-realistic dream did not include Captain America. Shame.

I am a bit off track now but hanging out was lovely and my tummy was stuffed. I felt energetic afterwards and at peace with the grayness. Thanks cuz :-)

While at the cafe I missed a few phone calls: one from my boss and another for a great friend. My boss left me a message saying I wasn't needed this week for Monday and Wednesday (new schedule starts this week) due to low numbers of kids. So that gives me more time this week to get settled. I am appreciative of this change of plans.

When I got home I called my friend Andrea and helped her out with ideas for a paper. I got all excited for her topic and loved having an in-depth conversation on education topics that are near and dear to my heart. I'm glad that we share similar views on teaching. :)

So, my friends, it's the little things in life that make an ordinary day more colorful. That's probably a cliche but that's okay right?

Sunshine knows how navigate it's way through the raindrops. Hip hip hooray!
